Chaim Madar

Tunisian rabbi (1933–2004)

Chaim Madar was a prominent Tunisian rabbi, born in 1933, who played a significant role in the country's Jewish community. He served as the chief rabbi of Tunisia, providing spiritual guidance and leadership to the community. His dedication and influence extended beyond his tenure as chief rabbi, as he continued to be a revered spiritual leader even after immigrating to Israel.

Rabbi Madar's passing in 2004 was met with an outpouring of condolences from various quarters, including Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. Funeral services were held in his honor at two notable synagogues: the Beit Mordechai Synagogue in La Goulette, Tunis, and the El Ghriba Synagogue on the island of Djerba, where he had spent most of his life. This tribute reflected the esteem in which he was held by the community, both in Tunisia and beyond, and marked the end of a remarkable life devoted to serving the Jewish community.
