David Benatar

jihoafrický filosof, profesor Univerzity v Kapském Městě

David Benatar is a South African philosopher born in 1966. He has established himself as a prominent figure in the field of philosophy, with a particular focus on moral philosophy. Through his work, Benatar has developed and advocated for the concept of antinatalism, which posits that coming into existence is a significant harm. This philosophical stance has been central to his academic and authorial pursuits.

Benatar's most notable publication is the book "Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence," released in 2006. In this work, he presents a comprehensive argument for the moral wrongness of procreation, citing the inherent harm caused by bringing sentient beings into existence. A key component of his argument is the asymmetry principle, which suggests that the absence of pain has inherent value, whereas the absence of pleasure is only problematic if it results in deprivation for an individual. Benatar's work has contributed to ongoing discussions in moral philosophy, inviting consideration of the ethical implications of existence and procreation.
