Aaron ben Joseph Sason
Ottoman Talmudic author
Aaron ben Joseph Sason was a prominent Ottoman Talmudic author, born in the mid-16th century, likely in Salonica. He received his rabbinical education under the guidance of the esteemed scholar Mordecai Matalon. As a result of his studies, Aaron ben Joseph developed a strong foundation in Talmudic scholarship, which would later become the basis of his teaching and writing career.
Aaron ben Joseph spent the latter part of the 16th century teaching and engaging in lively correspondence with his pupils and colleagues on various Talmudic questions. His discussions and debates were compiled and published in 1625 in Venice under the title "Torat Emet". In this work, he references his commentaries on notable texts, including "Yad ha-Ḥazaḳah" by Maimonides and the "Ṭur" by Jacob ben Asher. Although some of his writings may have been lost, his work "Torat Emet" remains a significant contribution to Talmudic scholarship, and it is possible that he also authored the work "Sefat Emet", which contains scholia to the Talmud and Tosafot.
