Abraham ben Jacob Cansino
Spanish-Jewish poet
Abraham ben Jacob Cansino was a prominent Spanish-Jewish poet of the seventeenth century. His literary contributions include the notable work "Aguddat Ezob" (A Bunch of Hyssop), a comprehensive collection of poems and rhetorical compositions, divided into three parts. This work garnered significant acclaim from esteemed figures such as Isaac Cansino and David Abu al-Khair, who praised it highly.
Beyond his literary pursuits, Abraham ben Jacob Cansino's life was marked by a notable encounter with the Spanish authorities. He was arrested and detained, along with his son, for possessing copies of the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds. The two were sent to Murcia, Spain, where they were subjected to prison-like conditions for a period and subsequently fined. The authorities also confiscated the Talmud copies. During this challenging time, Cansino received poems of consolation from friends and relatives, to which he responded with his own writings from Murcia.
