Adam Czerniaków

polský politik, člen židovské rady

Adam Czerniaków was a Polish politician and engineer, born in 1880. His career spanned multiple fields, including technology and politics, and he held the position of senator. During World War II, he played a significant role as the head of the Warsaw Ghetto Jewish Council, also known as the Judenrat. This position placed him at the forefront of the Jewish community in Warsaw during a tumultuous period in history.

Czerniaków's life came to a tragic end in 1942. On 23 July of that year, he took his own life by swallowing a cyanide pill. This desperate act occurred just a day after the commencement of the Grossaktion Warsaw, a horrific event that marked the beginning of the mass extermination of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. His death was a poignant reflection of the dire circumstances and immense pressure he faced as a leader of the Jewish community during one of the darkest periods of World War II.
