Otto Bauer
rakouský politik
Otto Bauer was a prominent Austrian socialist politician, born in 1881, who played a key role in shaping the country's political landscape. As a leading thinker of the Austromarxists, he sought to find a middle ground between social democracy and revolutionary socialism. Bauer's political career spanned several decades, during which he held various important positions, including membership in the Austrian Parliament from 1907 to 1934 and deputy party leadership of the Social Democratic Workers' Party from 1918 to 1934.
Bauer's tenure as Foreign Minister of the Republic of German-Austria in 1918 and 1919 was marked by his efforts to unify Austria and the Weimar Republic, although these attempts ultimately proved unsuccessful. His political strategy and decisions, including his opposition to coalition governments and his advice to wait for favorable historical circumstances, have been subject to criticism for potentially contributing to Austria's shift towards fascism in the 1930s. Following the outlawing of the Social Democratic Workers' Party by Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg in 1934, Bauer went into exile, where he continued to advocate for Austrian socialism until his death in 1938.
